Student Art Examples
- City Prints- Students were taught wet on wet watercolor technique and were asked to show warm colors on one side of page and cool colors on the other side.
- City Prints- Students experimented with salt for texture effects.
- In second class session students were shown reference materials of cityscapes, and were told to use those references to imagine their own cityscape, draw those images into foam, then use the foam as a block print to create city silhouettes. - Close observation drawing. 30 minutes. 4 year old student.
- Using a bear photograph for guidance and after discussion of sumi ink techniques, this student used india ink and watercolor concentrate ink to create this image. He was prompted to pay close attention to values, negative shapes, and to describe broad shapes with the same value rather than become detailed. Student age 10
- This student made a wire crimp bracelet using pliers, wire cutters, wire, and beads recycled from discarded jewelry. Student age 5
- Step one of the symmetrical necklace assignment. Students use jeweler’s pliers to wrap wire and create a “drop,” then string on beads on either side of the drop on a wire “bar.” Next class, students will add (their choice) a silver chain attached by a jump ring, or they will attach a wire string using crimp beads. Students ages 6-9
- Bat masks for pollinator day. Made from construction paper and recycled cardstock, decorated with oil pastel drawings and glitter coated glue. Students ages 3-5
- Gratitude trees made from collected sticks, wired together by students, then painted with acrylics.
- Gratitude trees- The leaves are paper made by students from lavender and tree pulp with recycled newspaper, recycled wallpaper, and scrap gold paper.
- Gratitude trees- Students used permanent markers to write what they are thankful for on the leaves and to decorate the base.
- Student is shown with his/her first sewing project, a lavender sachet for which s/he collected all the materials him/herself (reclaimed fabric). S/he also made the necklace and painted the journal.

- Constellation art during Solar System Week. Acrylic paint on wood with oil pastel. 4 year old student.
- Fall leaf prints in recycled paper journals. Leaves found on neighborhood walk were broken into simple or compound types. (Simple shown). 3 year old student.
- Monoprinting with acrylic paint on plastic plates. Assignment was to create clear lines of different kinds. 4 year old students.
- Wreaths made from found art objects from around Lake Merritt. 4 year old students.
